Jean Pierre Araujo Meloni currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Marine Governance Program of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law since 2023 and Legal Coordinator of the Conservamos por Naturaleza (We Conserve by Nature) initiative. He has also served as director of the Environmental Justice Initiative (2020 – 2022) and as attorney for the Forests and Ecosystem Services Program (2010 – 2019).
Jean Pierre is a lawyer and holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and Government from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has more than 20 years of experience (public and private) in environmental and natural resources law, policy, governance and environmental justice, conflict analysis and management, intercultural dialogue, public management and decentralization. He has complemented his academic training with postgraduate degrees in Environmental and Natural Resources Law; Analysis, Management and Resolution of Socio-environmental Conflicts; and, Governance and Political Management.
As a senior lawyer, he is currently in charge of leading the design and implementation of interventions focused on reducing environmental crimes, with emphasis on those affecting coastal marine ecosystems and those linked to artisanal fisheries, from a collaborative perspective with other members of the SPDA, and promoting and articulating strategic alliances with actors from the public and private sectors and civil society.
He has achieved from the SPDA the sustained support in the implementation of the current forestry and wildlife institutionalism: creation and strengthening of Serfor and Osinfor, the implementation of the regulation on cessions in use for agroforestry systems, the regulation and consultation process of Law No. 29763, the implementation of strategic environmental litigation strategies for the benefit of environmental leaders in a state of vulnerability. He has also worked in the design and development of specialized courses for the actors of the justice system in alliance with the Academy of the Magistracy, the Attorney General’s Office, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary.
