Indigenous Peoples and Collective Rights

SPDA

We improve the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples through actions that contribute to strengthening the realization of their rights.

Since ancient times, Indigenous peoples in our country have been the custodians of traditions, knowledge and an invaluable natural heritage. Nevertheless, their history in Peru has been marked by challenges and hardships, where they have had to face barriers for the preservation of their territories and the protection of their rights. This poses deep consequences on their wellbeing.

Beyond the traditional individual rights approach, defending collective rights in this case implies guaranteeing self-determination, cultural preservation, but also the access to lands and natural resources that will secure their future. It also involves the participation in decision making on matters that affect them and the protection against discrimination and violence.

In this regard, our proposal is developed through four work lines:

  • Improving the secure tenure of territories and other collective rights.
  • Providing assistance to achieve the legal recognition of traditional knowledge.
  • Contributing to the leadership of Indigenous, youths, and women organizations
  • Improving the protection of Indigenous peoples in isolation and initial contact.
