The Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA) will participate in the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 through the side event "Mujeres a la mar (Women at Sea): Strengthening Leadership for Our Oceans." This space aims to highlight and acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Peruvian women to marine conservation and the sustainability of artisanal fisheries.

This significant gathering will take place on Tuesday, June 10th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Van Loo Room of the Museé Chéret in Nice, France. This event will be crucial for emphasizing the importance of female leadership in marine governance and in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for the health of our marine ecosystems.

It is important to underscore that, although women actively participate in the protection of marine ecosystems and in activities such as artisanal fishing, their stories often remain invisible due to limited dissemination and documentation of their work. This event specifically seeks to contribute to the visibility of their contributions and to promote fair recognition of their role in marine conservation and the sustainable development of Peruvian coastal communities.

At this event, we will learn the inspiring stories of three prominent Peruvian women: Edilberta Rubiños, representative of Productos Hidrobiológicos Rubí del Mar in Ancón, Lima; Paola Luyo, from the National Service of State-Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) in Ica; and Carolina Butrich, from the HAZla por tu Ola initiative in Lima. Each of them represents a unique approach to the protection and conservation of the marine ecosystem, demonstrating the integral role women play in coastal life and in sea-related activities.

They are part of "Mujeres a la Mar," an initiative promoted by SPDA in strategic alliance with eight local organizations that collaborate closely with coastal communities in various regions of Peru. Through this initiative, women leaders in the sector can share their experiences, strengthen their capacities, and develop proposals to foster gender equality in marine conservation, generating a positive impact in their communities and on the social perception of women's roles in these areas.

SPDA reiterates its commitment to the recognition and empowerment of women who dedicate their lives to the protection of the Peruvian sea. We invite the international community, media, and the general public to join us at this event to celebrate and learn from these extraordinary leaders, whose work is essential for building a more sustainable future for our oceans.
