Pisco Playa coastal wetland on track to be included in SERFOR’s List of Fragile Ecosystems

On January 31, a workshop was held at the Casa de la Cultura in Pisco to present the proposal to include the Pisco Playa Wetland—a fragile ecosystem—in SERFOR’s Sectoral List of Fragile Ecosystems.

The event was organized by the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) and brought together civil society and various authorities, including representatives from the Provincial Municipality of Pisco, the Regional Office of Pisco, Plan Copesco, the Navy, PRETT, Bird Group of Peru, Huarango Nature, among others.

The ecosystem is located along the coast of the districts of Pisco and San Clemente, in the Ica region. According to SERFOR specialists, it is estimated that this marine-coastal ecosystem is home to 50 species of wild flora, invertebrates, and fish, as well as more than 80 species of birds. Notable species include the Peruvian tern (Sternula lorata), Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus), slate-colored seedeater (Xenospingus concolor), and Andean flamingos (Phoenicoparrus andinus).

"The inclusion of this urban wetland in the Sectoral List would represent official recognition of its high conservation value by the national authority. It is essential that the relevant authorities commit to its care and sustainable management, actively involving local communities and organizations," said Angélica Gómez, legal assistant with the Forests and Ecosystem Services Program at SPDA.
