"Respetemos la fauna silvestre marina" (Respect Marine Wildlife) is the name of the initiative launched by the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), with support from the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA). The initiative aims to raise public awareness about practicing responsible tourism during recreational activities at the beach and in the sea.

Allan Flores Ramos, Director of Sustainable Management of Wildlife Heritage at SERFOR, stated that the initiative seeks to ensure the well-being of marine wildlife, especially during the summer season, when people enjoy vacations in areas that are shared habitats with these species.

"Peru is home to a wide variety of marine species, including several types of sea turtles, birds such as the Humboldt penguin, and mammals like sea lions and sea otters. However, improper interaction with these species poses a threat to their populations," emphasized Flores Ramos.

He explained that as part of the "Respetemos la fauna silvestre marina" initiative, recommendations are being promoted to observe marine animals from a safe distance to avoid disturbing them and to respect their ecosystem.

How can we help promote healthy coexistence with wildlife?

  • Do not chase or harass wildlife

  • Do not feed them

  • Respect nesting and resting areas

  • Avoid using jet skis or drones near wildlife

Luis Zari, legal specialist with SPDA’s Forests and Ecosystem Services Program, highlighted the importance of avoiding practices that harm the welfare of wild animals:

"Every year, we see the impact that bad habits can have on marine wildlife watching, mainly due to a lack of information about the species. These types of strategies not only aim to raise awareness among the public, but also promote responsible tourism based on the idea that we can coexist respectfully with our wildlife and ensure their animal welfare."

Both spokespeople invited Peruvians to join the initiative and share their experiences of responsible wildlife observation on social media.
