Cristel Cordero Maldonado has been working as a marine conservation specialist in the Marine Governance Program of the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law since March 2025.
Cristel holds a degree in marine biology from the Universidad Científica del Sur. She has more than five years of experience in managing marine conservation research projects along the Peruvian coast, funded by The Rufford Foundation, the Conservation Leadership Program, and the UK Global Challenges Research Fund. She has worked closely with fishing communities to promote the sustainable use of hydrobiological resources, mitigate the bycatch of protected species such as cetaceans, turtles, and seabirds, and assess the impact of plastics and microplastics on marine ecosystems.
As a marine conservation specialist, she currently carries out activities focused on the management of marine protected areas for the Rewild project.
Among her achievements and contributions, she has been selected as a fellow in the Peace Boat US Youth for the SDGs program in 2025 and as an ambassador for the Break Free From Plastic youth program for 2023-2024. She has also authored and co-authored several scientific publications on the ecology and conservation of marine megafauna.
