Register for the event: “The Animal Welfare Approach to Wildlife”.

In an effort to address the challenges and opportunities related to animal welfare in Peruvian wildlife, the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law (SPDA) is organizing the event: "The animal welfare approach in wildlife: challenges and proposals 2 years after the Repsol spill". 

This event will bring together wildlife specialists and experts to analyze and discuss best practices and strategies to ensure the welfare of animals in their natural habitats, especially after the devastating effects of the oil spill in the Ventanilla Sea. 

Currently, the legal framework in Peru establishes an offense for acts of cruelty against wildlife, but this definition does not apply to wild species in the wild, only those in captivity. This creates legal loopholes, such as oil spills or other environmental disasters, riots or acts of cruelty, such as what happened to a white howler monkey (Cebus albifrons) that finally died after being tortured by members of the Navy.

The event will take place next Friday, July 12, at the PUCP Cultural Center (Av. Camino Real 1075, San Isidro), at 3:00 pm. Registration is free, but early registration is recommended as seating is limited.  

Topics to be discussed include the impact on wildlife and the rehabilitation process of species after the oil spill, what public policies are being promoted to strengthen wildlife conservation, and the importance of public education and awareness on these issues.

Participants will be able to engage in question and answer sessions, fostering a constructive and collaborative dialogue that will contribute to the formulation of effective and sustainable solutions.

SPDA invites the entire academic community, students, and the general public to join this initiative to not only remember the impacts of the oil spill, but to work together to ensure a safe future for our wildlife.
